Biocon Foundation Marks 20 Years of Transforming Lives Through Impactful Social Initiatives

Biocon Foundation, the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm of Biocon Group proudly marked two decades of commitment to social impact and community development. To commemorate this significant milestone, the Foundation hosted a special ceremony at its Biocon Park focused on celebrating ‘20 Years of LIGHT – Leading Inclusive Growth of Communities with a Human Touch’. The event celebrated the Foundation’s contributions over the years while reaffirming its dedication to building healthier, more empowered communities.

Since its inception in 2004, the Foundation has been dedicated to driving meaningful change in the areas of healthcare, education, environment, rural development, infrastructure development, and environmental sustainability, positively impacting 2.8 million lives across India. The milestone serves as an opportunity to reflect on the Foundation’s journey and chart the path forward for greater social transformation.

The event was graced by Dr C.N. Manjunath, Bengaluru Rural MP and a distinguished cardiologist and former Director of Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology Cardiovascular Sciences and Research as the chief guest. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Chairperson, Biocon Group, Dr Anupama Shetty, Mission Director, Biocon Foundation, Peter Bains, Group CEO, Biocon, Shreehas Tambe, CEO & MD, Biocon Biologics, Naveen Narayanan, Global Head of HR, Biocon Biologics, Maninder Kapoor Puri,  Head of HR, Biocon, and Pramuch Goel, Head of Corporate Affairs, Syngene along with other dignitaries, beneficiaries, stakeholders, Biocon Group’s leadership team, and employees, were also present to mark the occasion.

As part of the celebrations, the Foundation unveiled its 20th Annual Report, screened a special film highlighting its 20-year journey of meaningful impact on the society. The Foundation also felicitated its various stakeholders and team members who had partnered its journey of 2 decades.

Biocon Foundation’s journey is not just a legacy, it’s a promise kept, to help communities rise, as we continue to inspire, empower, and uplift them for a brighter future.

Some of the key initiatives:

  • The Arogya Raksha Yojana (ARY): A pioneering microinsurance program offering affordable healthcare to low-income families. Until 2015 ARY Insurance covered 1,600+ surgeries and treated 3.1 lakh patients across 18 health centres in Karnataka.
  • Oral Cancer Screenings using Mobile Phone (mHealth): A flagship initiative enabling early detection in high-risk communities through mobile technology. Annually, 85,000+ people are screened, with 10,000+ diagnosed and recommended for treatment. The program has led to 40+ publications in national and international journals.
  • eLAJ Smart Clinics, technology enabled Primary Healthcare Centres: Tech-enabled primary healthcare centers delivering quality care in rural areas. With 20+ clinics, the initiative has reached over 1 million people, conducted 9.5 lakh+ patient visits, and screened 48,000+ for diabetes, hypertension, and common cancers.
  • Biocon Nagar: A sustainable housing project for safe homes, created for over 400 families displaced by floods.
  • Lake Rejuvenation: Restoration of Hebbagodi and Yarandahalli Lakes, with Hebbagodi Lake earning a Limca Book of Records mention for India’s largest artificial floating island (12,000 sq. ft.). Miyawaki forests were planted with 3,500 saplings to aid afforestation.
  • Funding Metro Station: Funded the construction of Hebbagodi Metro Station, easing commute stress. Also transformed 50+ metro pillars from Huskur Gate to Hebbagodi with vibrant artwork.
